About the Neighborhood
Welcome to Northeast Minneapolis! Here you’ll find a community rich in character, history, entrepreneurship, social service and creativity. This unique corner of the city, known for its industrial and immigrant heritage, is a medley of ethnicities, restaurants, parks and art. Originally the home of the Polish, Ukrainian, Lebanese, and German immigrants, recent years have seen the influx of Latino, East African, and Arab populations. The result is an area rich in diversity linked to the churches, schools, service organizations, and businesses that have long remained. The area is currently experiencing a fantastic revitalization with its old warehouses and factories being put to new use. From the community’s most beloved institutions and historic residences to the trendy boutiques and welcoming coffee shops, enjoy your visit in Northeast Minneapolis.
What to do?
Northeast Minneapolis offers a wide array of dining, entertainment and theater venues. There are numerous restaurants to sample; from Polish to Indian to Vietnamese to East African to Mexican to American posh there is something for every taste. There is certainly no lack of great shopping experiences as well. Be sure to check out the Johnson Street merchants and the 3 block stretch of 13th Avenue. Along East Hennepin Avenue, near the Mississippi River, you will find countless shops, bars, dance clubs and markets. One of Northeast’s newest business districts is The Quarry, a suburban shopping center with national retailers and plentiful parking. Another main attraction of the area is the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Designated by the City of Minneapolis in 2003, the Arts District is the home of more than 400 artists. Regularly scheduled open studio and gallery crawls are the best times to experience what is rapidly becoming the primer location of arts and culture in the Twin Cities.
